Ghana’s Black Galaxies, the national team composed exclusively of home-based players, suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to South Africa’s senior side, Bafana Bafana, in an international friendly match played on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto.
Despite the loss, head coach Kassim Mingle Ocansey praised his players’ efforts against a strong opponent. In his post-match comments to the Ghana Football Association he said:
“Because the league is ongoing, we didn’t have much time to prepare, but the work was intensive. This game was an eye-opener, and I believe we are building a strong CHAN team. The players performed very well against a tough opponent, and we have a bright future ahead.”
The game served dual purposes: a final warm-up for South Africa ahead of their departure to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, and valuable preparation for Ghana’s Black Galaxies as they build towards the upcoming qualifiers for the 2026 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament reserved for domestically-based players.
The sole goal of the match came in the second half from South African midfielder Sipho Mbule, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box. South Africa dominated possession (around 66%) but found it difficult to break down Ghana’s organized defense in the first half.
The Black Galaxies, playing outside a FIFA international window, relied entirely on local league talent and created sporadic counter-attacking opportunities, though they struggled to convert in the final third.
Mingle highlighted the match as an “invaluable test” against top-tier opposition, noting areas for improvement particularly in attacking efficiency. He also commended South Africa as potential AFCON title contenders, acknowledging their tactical discipline and ability to capitalize on limited chances.
This friendly marked Mingle’s first competitive outing since his appointment as Black Galaxies coach. The team will now shift full focus to the CHAN qualifiers, with the squad gaining crucial experience from facing a full-strength Bafana Bafana side preparing for continental glory.
Ghana aims to reclaim their spot in the CHAN finals after missing recent editions, and performances like this—resilient despite the result—signal positive steps in their rebuilding process under the new coaching staff.
