Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare marked his debut for the Black Stars in a commanding 5-0 victory over Chad during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper, stepping onto the international stage for the first time, showcased the same composure and skill that have made him a standout performer in the Ghana Premier League recording 12 clean sheets
Facing competition from established goalkeepers Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joseph Wollacott, Asare seized his opportunity, delivering a confident performance that silenced doubters and thrilled fans. His steady presence in goal, handling Chad’s limited attacking threats with authority, underscored his readiness for the national team spotlight.

Ghana coach Otto Addo on his decision for opting for Benjamin Asare over Wollacott and Ati Zigi in post match said: “We saw a lot of games from the goalkeepers. It was a close range. All keepers looked good in training but Benjamin stood tall”.
“We started Benjamin Asare because he did a little better than the other goalkeepers in training”. He added.
This debut clean sheet not only highlighted Asare’s growing reputation but also strengthened Ghana’s position in their qualifying group, setting an optimistic tone as they prepare to face Madagascar next.
For Asare, it was a dream start in the iconic black shirt of the Black Stars, a moment that could define his international career moving forward.
