Bawumia’s Defeatist Comments Politically Convenient for NDC – Ben Doe

Ben Doe, a member of the National Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described recent remarks by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during his Thank You Tour as defeatist and politically convenient for the NDC. According to him, these comments serve as a wake-up call for government appointees to stay focused and remember the roots of the party.

Speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor FM 92.3, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Ben Doe warned that if the party’s leadership and appointees are not cautious, arrogance and complacency may set in. “Some appointees have already begun to show signs of arrogance—refusing to answer calls from grassroots members and colleagues who contributed to their political rise,” he noted.

He criticized Dr. Bawumia for attempting to distance himself from the factors that led to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections. “As the head of the Economic Management Team and once hailed as the ‘economic messiah’ by President Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia cannot exempt himself from blame,” Ben Doe argued.

He questioned how Dr. Bawumia could now disassociate himself from policies like the controversial E-Levy, which he once championed. “It’s as if he wants the public to believe the landslide defeat was due to former President Akufo-Addo and not himself, even though he was the face of the party’s campaign.”

Ben Doe drew comparisons with former President John Dramani Mahama, who after losing the 2020 elections, took full responsibility. He believes this approach allowed Mahama to reposition himself politically without the internal blame game currently afflicting the NPP.

Also appearing on the show, Emmanuel Azubila Salam, Executive Secretary of ADAM-GH, cautioned NDC appointees against developing a culture of arrogance. “The tendency for power to breed arrogance is real, and the NDC must be vigilant,” he warned.

On a separate issue, Azubila also addressed the suspension of the Chief Justice, saying the President’s actions were constitutional and accused the NPP of politicising the matter to score cheap political points.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the NPP, reflected on the party’s record during the Thank You Tour. He acknowledged both successes and shortcomings of the administration.

“We had a solid record of achievements, but not everything went right,” he admitted. He cited progress in digitalisation, infrastructure development, and economic reforms as key successes of the NPP government.

Dr. Bawumia conceded that global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and economic pressures, had affected the party’s ability to achieve all its goals. Nevertheless, he assured party supporters that the NPP remained committed to innovation and public service.

“We are not perfect, and no government is,” he said. “But we’ve learned valuable lessons and are better prepared for the future.”
