Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah, a former deputy ambassador from Ghana to China, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), lacks the credibility to call for a debate with John Mahama.
According to Ankrah, Dr. Bawumia’s intention is merely to ridicule Mr. Mahama on a shared platform. He described Dr. Bawumia as a comedian seeking validation from the NDC Presidential Candidate.
Dr. Bawumia has accused Mahama of avoiding a debate, claiming that Mahama fears his “empty policies will be exposed.” This accusation came after Mr. Mahama’s campaign team rejected calls for a debate.
Addressing supporters in Bunkpurugu in the North East Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed eagerness for a debate with Mahama but doubted it would happen, suggesting Mahama was “running away.”
However, speaking on Ahotor FM’s ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem’ programme on Friday, Mr. Horace Ankrah argued that Mr. Mahama would be lowering his standards if he accepted Dr. Bawumia’s debate challenge.
He criticized Dr. Bawumia’s economic management team, accusing him of overseeing the collapse of the economy and avoiding crucial questions.
Mr. Ankrah pointed out that even in 2020, Mr. Mahama called for a debate, but Dr. Bawumia refused. He described Dr. Bawumia as desperate and a disgrace to both academia and democracy.
He also claimed that Dr. Bawumia mismanaged Zimbabwe’s economy and has nothing to show for his track record at the Bank of Ghana.
The former Ambassador believes that voting for Bawumia would be unfortunate for Ghanaians because he lacks ideas on how to run the economy.
He questioned Dr. Bawumia’s sudden interest in debating Mr. Mahama and criticized the NPP’s choice of Dr. Bawumia and Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as candidates for the 2024 elections, calling it a disastrous pairing.
“I don’t have anything against NAPO, but disrespecting Kwame Nkrumah was a low blow. His comments show how arrogant he is, and it’s unfortunate. Pairing him with Dr. Bawumia is a disaster in waiting, and Ghana will be hurt if the NPP wins the 2024 elections,” he told Citizen Kofi Owusu.
Mr. Ankrah noted that the NDC is focused on serious campaigning and engaging with the people to vote for John Mahama in the December elections.
