The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is advocating for a comprehensive financial and technological overhaul to transform the agricultural value chain in Ghana.
During a community engagement event in Asikuma-Odoben, Central Region, Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for a digitalized agricultural sector that harnesses modern technology to boost productivity and ensure food security.
Highlighting the NPP’s achievements in the health sector, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that similar success could be replicated in agriculture.
“Just as we have successfully implemented digital solutions in healthcare to improve service delivery, I believe we can leverage technology to revolutionize farming practices across the country,” he stated.
He underscored the critical need for investment in digital tools and platforms that can enhance efficiency, from farm management to supply chain logistics.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the transformation of the agricultural sector is essential not only for boosting local production but also for creating jobs and reducing poverty in rural communities.
“We need to empower our farmers with the right tools and knowledge to increase their yields and income. This can be achieved through access to credit facilities, training programs, and modern farming techniques that are supported by technology,” he asserted.
During his address, Dr. Bawumia introduced a series of proposals aimed at facilitating this transformation, including partnerships with financial institutions to provide affordable loans for farmers, as well as the development of mobile applications to offer real-time market information, weather forecasts, and agronomic advice.
“By digitalizing agriculture, we can help our farmers make informed decisions, access new markets, and ultimately increase their profitability,” he explained.
The NPP flagbearer also pointed out the importance of developing infrastructure to support agricultural activities, such as irrigation systems and storage facilities.
He argued that investments in these areas are crucial for minimizing post-harvest losses and ensuring that farmers can access markets efficiently. “We must create an environment where our farmers can thrive, and that means investing in the infrastructure they need to succeed,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
Engaging with the local community, Dr. Bawumia encouraged residents to embrace innovation and modern practices in their farming activities.
He urged young people to consider careers in agriculture, emphasizing that a tech-driven agricultural sector offers numerous opportunities for growth and development. “We need our youth to see agriculture not just as a means of subsistence but as a viable and profitable career path,” he said.
As he concluded his speech, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies that will uplift the agricultural sector and create a sustainable future for Ghanaian farmers.
“Together, we can build a resilient agricultural economy that feeds our nation and positions Ghana as a leader in agricultural innovation in the region,” he declared, inspiring hope among attendees for a transformative approach to farming in Ghana.
