Bawku MP Condemns Killing of NHIA Director, Urges Calm Amid Ongoing Peace Efforts

Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Akugri was shot and killed in an attack near Nangodi, close to Bolgatanga, with his body subsequently set ablaze. Ayariga described the incident as “gruesome” and “dastardly” in a statement issued on May 20, 2025.

The MP extended his heartfelt condolences to Akugri’s family, referring to him as a “comrade”. Ayariga called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the crime and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. He emphasized the need for swift action to restore order in the region and protect its citizens.

Ayariga also urged the people of Bawku to remain calm and focus on the ongoing peace efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The traditional leader is working to find a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, a decades-long dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups that has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. Ayariga commended the youth of Bawku for their restraint in recent times and reaffirmed their collective commitment to peace and stability.

The killing of Akugri is a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in the region. The Bawku conflict has claimed over 300 lives since November 2021, with a recent surge in violence resulting in scores of deaths and displacements. The situation has become alarming, with no lives being spared, including infants, soldiers, police officers, and other professionals.

Ayariga’s statement highlights the need for sustained efforts to address the underlying causes of the conflict and promote lasting peace in the region. The government and security forces are working to contain the unrest and safeguard residents, while revered chieftaincy leaders engage with factions of the warring groups to bring an end to the violence. Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the long-standing dispute, with discussions ongoing to bring lasting peace to the area.
