Private legal practitioner Lawyer Gideon Nii Tettey Tetteh has addressed allegations surrounding purported footage involving members of the five-member committee investigating the petition on the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo .
These allegations were raised by Alfred Ababio Kumi, a known sympathizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who suggested that the footage indicated possible conflict of interest among some justices and lawyers on the committee. Mr. Kumi called for the dissolution of the committee, citing concerns over the integrity of the investigation.
Reacting to the claims in an interview with Nana Dogbey, Lawyer Tettey Tetteh dismissed the allegations, emphasizing that the purported footage lacks substantive evidence to support the accusations.
He clarified that committee members, like any other professionals, have the right to engage in normal social activities such as sharing meals.
“This particular CCTV footage doesn’t suggest any breach of ethics,” Lawyer Tettey Tetteh said. “Judges and committee members stepping out for lunch, breakfast, or dinner is a normal human activity. The fact that they belong to the same committee does not mean they are forbidden from dining together. This does not in any way violate ethical standards.”
Lawyer Tetteh further questioned the premise of the allegations, noting that there is no evidence to suggest that discussions pertaining to the committee’s work took place during such informal interactions. “Even if they met, do we have evidence that they were discussing committee matters? There is no indication of that. This appears to be a calculated attempt to delay the resolution of the petition regarding the suspension of the Chief Justice,” he added.
He urged the public to focus on the substantive issues rather than being swayed by unverified claims, stressing the importance of allowing the committee to carry out its mandate without undue interference.
