The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has strongly denied any connection to the alleged criminal misuse of its currency transport boxes, cautioning against reputational damage and urging a swift and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
In response to recent reports suggesting that these specialized boxes may have been used for unauthorized and potentially criminal activities, the BoG issued a firm statement, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding its reputation and the integrity of its operations.
“These currency boxes are designed to be durable, reusable, and capable of withstanding the rigorous demands of logistics,” the central bank stated in a communiqué titled “Use and Misuse of Bank of Ghana Currency Transport Boxes.”
The BoG clarified that, while the boxes are frequently returned empty by commercial banks or repurposed for other legitimate uses, instances have arisen where the public has creatively adapted them for personal or commercial purposes, such as storage and transport.
However, the bank drew a clear line between permissible reuse and illegal activities. “The Bank of Ghana categorically disassociates itself from any criminal or unauthorized use of these currency boxes,” the statement read.
The BoG expressed concern over reports suggesting that some individuals are exploiting the visual association of the boxes to tarnish its reputation or erode public trust. It strongly asserted that any misuse of the boxes for illicit activities must be fully investigated, with perpetrators brought to justice.
“In an age where appearances can easily fuel damaging assumptions, the public must understand that a reused currency box does not equate to the authority or endorsement of the nation’s central bank,” the statement cautioned.
The BoG reiterated its call for law enforcement agencies to expedite their investigations and prosecute anyone found culpable. The central bank remains steadfast in protecting its credibility and ensuring the public’s confidence in its operations.
