The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) has expressed its willingness to support Ghana’s efforts to strengthen and modernise the country’s waste management sector.
The commitment was expressed during a working visit by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Obenewaa Ocloo, and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, to key waste management facilities operated by the Jospong Group of Companies in the Greater Accra Region.
The delegation was joined by BADEA’s Vice President for Operations and Secretary General, Dr Fatima Elsheikh.
The visit covered the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), the Achimota Waste Transfer Station, the Jamestown Waste Transfer Station and other critical waste management facilities.
The officials assessed the infrastructure, technology and systems being used for waste collection, transfer, treatment, recycling and resource recovery.
According to Hon. Ocloo, Dr Elsheikh’s participation and the Bank’s willingness to support Ghana’s waste management efforts were particularly encouraging as the country explores sustainable financing and innovative solutions to its growing sanitation needs.
She said partnerships such as the one with BADEA were essential to mobilising the resources required to modernise the sector and improve waste management services.
The Minister noted that waste management, particularly in Greater Accra, goes beyond keeping streets clean, as it has direct implications for public health, environmental protection, community dignity and economic development.
She said the region must therefore be prepared to embrace technology, innovation, investment and strategic partnerships to address its sanitation challenges.
Hon. Ocloo also called for closer cooperation between central government, the Regional Coordinating Council, MMDAs and private sector operators to ensure that investments in waste management translate into improved services for residents.
She said Greater Accra remained committed to the “Keep Accra Clean” agenda and would continue to pursue measures aimed at creating cleaner, healthier and more resilient communities.
