Baba Adamu’s 16th-Minute Header Hands Hearts of Oak Sweet Revenge in Tense Super Clash

In a thrilling Ghana Premier League encounter on matchday 22, Accra Hearts of Oak delivered a memorable 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The decisive moment came in the 16th minute when defender Baba Adamu rose powerfully to connect with a well-delivered set piece from Martin Karikari, directing a looping header past goalkeeper Mohamed Camara to give the Phobians the lead, sending the stadium into ecstasy.

This goal marked a sweet revenge for Hearts of Oak, who had endured a challenging run against their fierce opponents in recent meetings, and it ended Kotoko’s impressive unbeaten home streak in league matches this season.

The contest grew even more intense when Hearts of Oak were reduced to ten men. Emmanuel Amankwah received a second yellow card from referee Daniel Laryea for a reckless tackle on Kotoko’s Saaka Dauda, forcing coach Mas-ud Didi Dramani to reorganize his side defensively.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and sustained pressure from the home team, the Phobians held firm with disciplined defending and resilient teamwork, securing all three points in a gritty performance.

Asante Kotoko approached the Super Clash without their head coach, as Karim Zito had resigned earlier in the week on February 9, 2026, following a string of underwhelming results.

These included their elimination from the MTN FA Cup by Aduana FC and a broader dip in form that left the club trailing in the title race. The defeat represented back-to-back losses for the Porcupine Warriors and compounded their struggles, dropping them to fifth place in the standings with 35 points. They now sit four points behind Hearts of Oak and nine points adrift of league leaders Medeama SC.

For Hearts of Oak, the triumph was a significant boost, lifting them into a stronger position—likely third with 39 points from 22 matches—and narrowing the gap to the top.

It also adjusted the historical record in this storied rivalry, which has now seen 120 meetings overall between the two giants of Ghanaian football, with the win helping Hearts edge closer in the overall tally (Kotoko still hold a slight edge historically with more victories).

Adding to the match’s significance, the Black Stars technical team, led by head coach Otto Addo, was in attendance to observe the intense Super Clash. Assistant coaches Alain Ravera, Kim Lars Björkegren, and Desmond Ofei were also present, alongside other members of the national team setup, as they monitored performances amid preparations for upcoming international commitments.

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was named man of the match for his outstanding performance, producing a series of crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet and deny Kotoko an equalizer despite the Phobians playing with ten men for much of the game.

Kotoko will look to recover momentum in their next fixture against Young Apostles, aiming to halt the slide and regain ground in the standings.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak prepare to host former coach Samuel Boadu and Berekum Chelsea at the Legon Stadium the following weekend, eager to build on this morale-lifting result and keep their title aspirations alive in what remains a tightly contested Ghana Premier League season.
