Awards Are Not My Focus Right Now – Nero X

Ghanaian singer Nero X says chasing awards isn’t a priority for him at this stage in his career. While accolades can elevate an artiste’s profile, the Osey hitmaker is more focused on producing quality music for his fans.

With more than a decade in the industry, Joseph Nkrumah Buabeng, popularly known as Nero X, remains unbothered by the absence of major awards. He believes recognition will come naturally in due time.

“Of course, awards can have a positive impact on an artiste’s journey, but that’s not my focus now,” Nero X said in an exclusive interview with Graphic Showbiz on Saturday, March 29. “My aim is to stay true to my craft and give my fans timeless music. The rest will follow.”

Although he has received a few awards both locally and abroad, Nero X is yet to clinch top honours from prestigious award schemes such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), despite earning a few nominations over the years.

“When it comes to awards, yes, I’ve received some recognition here and internationally. But I haven’t won anything from TGMA yet—and that doesn’t bother me. I’m all about the work. I believe when the time is right, the awards will come,” he emphasized.

Switching gears, Nero X also shared his views on Ghana’s creative industry, expressing optimism about its growth, particularly under the current administration.

“I’m impressed with the direction the creative sector is taking, especially with the government’s support—even though they’ve only been in office for three months. I’m hopeful we’ll see more meaningful changes that’ll help our industry go global,” he said.

On March 29, Nero X released a new single titled Low Key, which he described as a deeply personal track reflecting his journey in the music industry.

“Low Key is a reflection of my experiences over the years. First, it’s a thank-you to everyone who’s supported me from the beginning. Second, it’s to inspire my fans not to give up, but to stay focused and work hard. And finally, it’s my way of saying I’m still here—working, growing, and keeping things ‘low key,’” he explained.
