Australian authorities have charged a man with terrorism and multiple murder-related offenses following a deadly shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead, police said Wednesday.
New South Wales Police and local courts confirmed that a total of 59 charges are being brought in connection with the attack, which also wounded dozens of people, including two police officers who responded to the scene.
The charges include committing a terrorist act, murder, wounding with intent to murder, discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, placing an explosive device, and publicly displaying a terrorist symbol.
Health officials said 20 people remain hospitalized for injuries sustained during Sunday’s shooting. One patient is listed in critical condition, while several others are described as critical but stable, according to NSW Health.
Police allege the attack was carried out by two suspects, identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. Investigators say six firearms used in the shooting were owned by the elder Akram.
Sajid Akram was killed at the scene. Naveed Akram survived after being shot and was taken to hospital, where police say he remains under medical care.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said authorities have not yet formally questioned the younger suspect, who reportedly regained consciousness on Tuesday after emerging from a coma. Officers are waiting for medication to wear off before proceeding with an interview.
“We need to ensure he fully understands what is happening,” Lanyon said.
The attack occurred during a public Hanukkah celebration attended by families and community members. As news of the charges emerged, mourners gathered across Sydney to begin funerals and memorial services for the victims.
During the incident, a bystander, Syrian Australian Ahmed al-Ahmed, tackled one of the gunmen and disarmed him. Al-Ahmed was shot and hospitalized.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited him on Tuesday, praising his actions. “He represents the best of our country,” Albanese said.
Authorities said investigations into the motive and circumstances of the attack remain ongoing.
