ACCRA, Ghana: The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has described the recent congestion in public transportation across the country as disturbing and worrying, noting that it is unacceptable for commuters to queue for long hours to access transport services.
According to the Minister, it is regrettable that citizens continue to endure prolonged delays and congestion in public transport, despite recent reductions in fuel prices.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that some transport operators are deliberately engaging in rent-seeking behaviourby creating artificial shortages.
He stated that although transportation in Ghana is largely driven by the private sector, the persistent reduction in fuel prices compelled transport unions to announce a 15 percent reduction in transport fares. However, some operators, dissatisfied with the fare adjustment, responded by creating scarcity.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that such conduct is unlawful and assured the public that government is taking steps to address the situation and ensure that offenders are brought to order.
He further reminded transport operators that there is a standing agreement between government and transport unions to review transport fares twice a year, unless extraordinary circumstances necessitate an earlier adjustment.
The Minister urged transport operators to adhere to the long-established pricing arrangements and desist from rent-seeking practices that are worsening conditions for commuters.
