Accra, Ghana: The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has emphasized that the reduced size of government under the John Dramani Mahama administration has led to significant financial savings, which, he says, must be properly documented and placed on record.
According to the Minister, the deliberate decision to run a leaner government has substantially lowered the cost of governance and eased pressure on the public purse.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said it is beyond dispute that the current administration has made considerable savings, stressing that these savings must be acknowledged and officially recorded as part of transparent governance.
He explained that under the previous Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration, the number of ministers at a point exceeded 120, whereas the Mahama administration has reduced that figure to about 60.
This reduction, he noted, has led to savings in salaries, allowances, official vehicles, fuel, security, office accommodation, and other logistical costs associated with ministerial appointments.
The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP further pointed out that the previous administration also maintained a very large political staff at the Presidency, numbering as many as 361 political appointees at one point.
He stressed that cutting down such numbers has significantly reduced wage bills and administrative overheads.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu argued that the cumulative savings from fewer ministers and political staff translate into millions of cedis that can now be redirected toward critical sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, and social protection.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, prudent use of public funds, and accountability, noting that a leaner government is not only cost-effective but also more efficient.
