ACCRA, Ghana, 6 March: President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to intensify the fight against corruption, describing the practice as a “cancer” that has eaten into the soul of the nation and threatens Ghana’s development.
Delivering his address at Ghana’s Independence Day celebration marking 69 years of independence, the President warned that corruption continues to rob citizens of vital development opportunities while betraying the sacrifices of the country’s founding generation.
He noted that the misuse of public resources directly undermines progress in key sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
“Every cedi stolen from the public purse is a hospital bed that remains empty, a classroom without textbooks, and a road left unmotorable,” President Mahama declared.
The President emphasized that his administration has taken deliberate steps to strengthen accountability by insulating anti-corruption institutions from political interference.
He made it clear that under his leadership, no public official would be shielded from investigation or prosecution, regardless of their political affiliation or status.
President Mahama stressed that the fight against corruption cannot be left to government alone, urging citizens to play an active role in safeguarding public resources and demanding transparency from leaders.
He called for what he described as a “cultural revolution of integrity,” encouraging Ghanaians to embrace honesty, discipline, and accountability in both public and private life.
According to him, the values of integrity and hard work must once again become the foundation of national development.
The President maintained that Ghana’s progress depends not only on economic policies but also on the moral choices of its citizens and leaders.
He concluded that true independence can only be meaningful when public resources are managed responsibly and the trust of the people is protected.
