ACCRA, Ghana, 6 March: President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to present a historic resolution at the United Nations declaring slavery and the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity.
Delivering Ghana’s 69th Independence Day address, the President said the legacy of slavery remains an unhealed wound that must be addressed through justice and reparations.
He stressed that the forced removal of millions of Africans across the Atlantic devastated the continent while enriching global empires.
According to him, the resolution will seek global recognition that slavery was a crime without a statute of limitations and must be confronted honestly.
“Reparations are not charity. They are compensation. They are justice delayed but not denied,” he declared.
President Mahama said Ghana would once again take a leadership role in the global campaign for justice, just as it did when it became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence.
The President noted that the visit of the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Michael Drew, symbolized the reconnection between Africa and the Caribbean after centuries of separation caused by the slave trade.
