AUDIO: Change GWL MD If He Is Not Meeting Targets – Abraham Koomson to President Mahama

TEMA, Ghana, 28 February: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has raised concerns over persistent water shortages in parts of the country, warning that the situation could undermine the government’s 24-hour economy industrialisation drive.

According to the veteran unionist, unreliable water supply poses a serious threat to productivity, particularly for industries expected to operate around the clock under the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, 28th February, Mr. Koomson called for decisive leadership at the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), stating that the Managing Director must be held accountable for performance targets.

“If the Managing Director is not meeting his targets, then he should be changed,” he stressed.

The current Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, was appointed in early 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama.

As of February 2026, Mr. Mutawakilu has come under increasing pressure over ongoing water shortages, particularly in Accra. He has attributed the crisis to a combination of operational and supply challenges. However, Mr. Koomson insists that this is not the time for excuses.

The GFL Secretary-General emphasized that workers and businesses cannot afford to operate at a loss due to inconsistent water supply.

He noted that without urgent intervention, the water crisis could weaken industrial output and frustrate the objectives of the 24-hour economy policy.

Mr. Koomson therefore urged government to prioritise practical solutions and ensure that leadership at Ghana Water Limited delivers measurable results in line with national development goals.
