AUDIO: Any Serious Labour Leader Will Align With NDC’s Socialist Ideology – Abraham Koomson

TEMA, Ghana, 14 February: Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has asserted that any serious trade union leader should naturally align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) because of the party’s ideological orientation toward socialism and worker welfare.

According to Mr. Koomson, labour movements across the world are historically rooted in socialist principles, making it logical for union leaders to support political traditions that prioritize the interests of workers and social justice.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, February 14, he acknowledged that while the NDC may have its own challenges, it remains the most reliable political tradition for workers in Ghana due to its pro-labour inclination.

“Ideologically, the NDC is socialist, and any serious trade union leader will align with a political party that has socialism as its foundation. Even when they go off track, workers have the power to correct them and bring them back to the right direction,” he said.

Mr. Koomson cautioned labour leaders against associating themselves with political parties that do not genuinely prioritize the welfare of workers, stressing that some political actors are driven primarily by self-interest rather than national development and social protection.

He therefore urged labour unions to remain principled, united, and strategic in their engagements with political actors, emphasizing that their decisions should always be guided by what best advances the interests, dignity, and economic security of workers.

“The labour movement must move with political forces that can genuinely help workers. We must be guided by principle, not convenience,” he added.
