TEMA, Ghana, 21 February: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the Attorney-General to take decisive action to ensure that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is returned to Ghana to face the law.
According to Mr. Koomson, national attention should remain firmly on ensuring accountability for alleged economic mismanagement rather than on political debates involving the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under whose administration the former minister served.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, February 21, he questioned why the former minister had reportedly left the country if there was no wrongdoing during his tenure.
“If the NPP did the right thing, why is it that their finance minister has absconded from his own country?” he asked, insisting that the focus should be on ensuring justice rather than political defence.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a wanted person, citing alleged corruption and procurement irregularities during his time in office. The investigations reportedly involve transactions linked to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), the National Cathedral project, and other matters.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has formally submitted an extradition request to United States authorities to facilitate his return to Accra. Reports indicate that Mr. Ofori-Atta was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in January 2026 after his visa was revoked.
Both the Attorney-General’s Department and the Office of the Special Prosecutor are said to be pursuing legal and diplomatic processes to secure his extradition.
Mr. Koomson further argued that the NPP should cooperate with authorities by supporting efforts to make the former minister available to face investigations, rather than placing pressure on the current government.
He stressed that accountability in the management of Ghana’s finances is essential to restoring public confidence in the country’s economic governance.
