TEMA, Ghana, 14 March: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has questioned the decision to sell large numbers of recruitment forms for Ghana’s security services when the available positions were limited to only about 5,000.
Mr. Koomson argued that the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, should have been more transparent with the public about the limited number of vacancies before the recruitment process began.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s “Yepe Ahunu” programme on March 14, 2026, Mr. Koomson also criticised the practice of charging applicants for recruitment forms. According to him, young people who are prepared to risk their lives to serve the country in the security services should not be made to pay for the opportunity.
The recent recruitment exercise attracted close to 500,000 applicants, all competing for roughly 5,000 available positions across the security services.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has demanded a refund of approximately GH¢113 million collected from unsuccessful applicants, describing the recruitment process as unfair and exploitative.
The exercise was also affected by technical difficulties and internet disruptions during the aptitude test stage, which reportedly led to the disqualification of many applicants who were unable to complete their tests successfully.
Despite the concerns raised, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has defended the process, insisting that the recruitment exercise was conducted in a manner intended to maintain standards, fairness, and transparency.
However, Mr. Koomson emphasised that the situation highlights the urgent need for the government to create more employment opportunities for the youth, rather than relying heavily on the security services as the primary avenue for jobs. According to him, expanding opportunities in other sectors of the economy would help address the growing unemployment challenge facing young people in the country.
