Attorney General Files Criminal Charges Over Controversial Accra Sky Train Project

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has officially filed criminal charges against Mr. Solomon Asamoah, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairperson of the GIIF. The charges are in connection with the much-criticized Accra Sky Train project.

According to official court documents, the charges stem from alleged irregularities and financial mismanagement surrounding the multi-million-dollar urban transportation initiative, which was announced with great fanfare but has since stalled amid controversy and public concern.

The Accra Sky Train project, originally intended to address the capital’s growing traffic congestion and enhance public transport, was backed by the GIIF as a public-private partnership.
However, years after its launch, there has been no significant construction progress, sparking questions about the management of funds and decision-making processes at the GIIF during the project’s initiation.

Dr. Ayine’s office has accused both Mr. Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi of authorizing and overseeing investments and commitments without proper due diligence, potentially causing financial loss to the state. The nature of the charges includes alleged breaches of procurement laws and financial regulations.

“The Attorney General’s decision to pursue this case is based on the need to uphold accountability and transparency in the use of public resources,” a source close to the investigation stated. “No individual is above the law, and public officeholders must be held to the highest standards.”

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served fairly and without political interference.
