Attorney General Confirms Ordering Arrest of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi Over $2M Payment Probe

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that he personally authorized the arrest of Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), in connection with a $2 million payment under investigation for alleged financial irregularities.

The arrest, carried out by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on February 23, 2025, at Kawukudi near Nima in Accra, forms part of an ongoing probe into Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s tenure as Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF).

Speaking in an interview on March 3, 2025, Dr. Ayine confirmed his role in the arrest, stating unequivocally, “Yes, I did.” He disclosed that during questioning, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi admitted that a $2 million payment had been made for a project that was never completed.

“The circumstances surrounding this payment are still under investigation. We are looking into the individuals involved and whether due processes were followed,” Dr. Ayine emphasized.

The revelation has sparked widespread public interest, with many calling for a swift and thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the financial discrepancies. However, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s legal team has strongly denied any wrongdoing on his part. Kenneth Korankye, a member of his legal counsel, expressed confidence in his client’s innocence. “We firmly believe that Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi is not guilty of the allegations being leveled against him. Let the investigators present their evidence, and we will respond robustly,” he said.

Korankye also cautioned against rushing to conclusions, stressing that the legal process must be allowed to run its course.

The arrest has reignited discussions on accountability within public office and the mechanisms needed to prevent financial irregularities. Public opinion remains divided, with some praising the Attorney General’s decisive action, while others question whether the investigation will lead to meaningful reforms in governance and financial oversight.

As the probe continues, all eyes remain on the Attorney General’s office and the judiciary, with Ghanaians hoping for a transparent resolution to this high-profile case.
