Attorney-General and Deputy Overwhelmed – GFL Boss Raises Concerns

TEMA, Ghana, 18 April: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over what he describes as mounting pressure on the Attorney-General and his deputy, warning that both officials appear overwhelmed by the demands of the office.

According to Mr. Koomson, internal challenges within the Attorney-General’s Department are undermining its effectiveness.

He alleged that some state attorneys are not fully aligned with the leadership of the office, making it difficult for the Attorney-General to deliver on his mandate.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, April 18, Mr. Koomson further claimed that a number of lawyers within the department are politically affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), raising concerns about trust and cooperation within the institution.

He warned that this lack of cohesion could hinder the Attorney-General’s ability to function effectively, stressing that without full institutional support, efforts to prosecute key cases may be delayed.

Mr. Koomson also expressed concern about the slow pace of prosecutions related to the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, which has been a major part of the government’s anti-corruption drive.

To address these challenges, he called for a strategic reassignment of lawyers within the system, suggesting that experienced and committed legal professionals be deployed to the Attorney-General’s Department to help fast-track prosecutions.

He further urged the National Democratic Congress Council of Elders to intervene, noting that the body has a critical role to play in ensuring the success of the government’s legal and anti-corruption agenda.
