Asuom Krontihene Not Destooled – Family and Residents Reject Claims

The Mmirewasan clan of Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region has firmly rejected reports that Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III has been destooled as the Krontihene of Asuom, describing the claims as false and misleading.

According to the clan and residents of Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III remains the legitimate Krontihene of the community. They have urged the public to disregard reports suggesting otherwise, insisting that no valid customary or traditional process has been followed to remove him from office.

Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, known privately as Kwasi Ringold, is alleged to have been declared destooled by the Chief of Asuom, Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II, following comments he made critical of the Akufo-Addo administration before and after the 2024 general elections. He had publicly expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama and openly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including remarks made in December 2025 in which he questioned the leadership quality of the party’s presidential hopefuls, comparing them unfavourably to past figures such as Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, Victor Owusu, and J. A. Kufuor.

However, Opanyin Kofi Agyabong Dwantoahene of the Asuom Asona Mmirewasan family has strongly debunked the alleged destoolment. Speaking at a family gathering in Asuom on Saturday, January 3, 2026, he challenged the legitimacy of the purported ritual said to have been performed to remove the Krontihene.

He explained that under customary law, a chief accused of wrongdoing must be summoned, charged, and given a fair hearing before chiefs and elders. He stressed that no chief has the authority to unilaterally sit in a palace and slaughter a sheep to declare a Krontihene destooled.

Opanyin Agyabong further stated that an alternative legitimate process would have been to refer the matter to the Okyehene, who could then summon the Krontihene to answer the allegations. He maintained that none of these procedures were followed, rendering the alleged destoolment invalid and contrary to tradition.

He emphasized that Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, as Mmirewasanhene, a palanquin chief who sits on a black stool, can only be destooled by the Mmirewasan royal family. According to him, no individual, including the Chief of Asuom, has the authority to remove him from office.

The head of the Asuom royal family, Opanyin Kofi Amoako (Alhaji), whose family is responsible for the appointment of the Asuomhene, supported this position. He questioned the legitimacy of Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II and his capacity to declare the Krontihene stool vacant, providing what he described as documentary evidence to back his claims.

Opanyin Amoako alleged that Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II has never sat on a legitimate black stool and therefore lacks the authority to describe himself as a chief. He claimed that the Asuom Asona Royal Family considers the Asuomhene an impostor and expressed confidence that a legitimate chief would soon be enstooled to bring peace and development to the area.

He appealed to the youth to remain calm and allow lawful and traditional processes to prevail. Sub-chiefs and various abusuapanyin present at the meeting reportedly pledged their loyalty to the Asuom Asona Royal Family and its chosen leadership.

Meanwhile, the youth of Asuom attributed the area’s lack of development to the prolonged chieftaincy disputes and called on Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Overlord of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, to intervene to restore peace and stability in Akyem Asuom.
