Ashanti Regional Police Commander transferred

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa, has been relieved of his duties following a tumultuous Council of State election in the region. His removal comes on the heels of a chaotic incident where unidentified thugs stormed the polling center, disrupting the electoral process and forcing officials to suspend the proceedings ¹.

The violence erupted after supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was initially expected to win, allegedly became disgruntled with the outcome and demanded a review. Despite a sizable police presence, the situation spiralled out of control, prompting a temporary halt to the election.

In the aftermath of the incident, DCOP Abrokwa has been reassigned to the Police Headquarters, with the current Commander of the Central West Police Region set to assume his position. The police have also launched a thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of the violence, which marred the electoral process at the Regional Coordinating Council.

The Electoral Commission is yet to release an official statement addressing the disruption or outlining the next steps regarding the election results. The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the ability of the police to maintain law and order during sensitive events.
