Ashanti Regional Police Commander Removed Following Council of State Election Chaos

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa, has been relieved of his duties following violent disruptions during the Council of State elections held in Kumasi. This decision, announced by the Ghana Police Service, takes immediate effect.

The elections, which were conducted at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, descended into chaos when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the venue, causing significant disruption to the process. The disturbances escalated tensions, prompting security personnel on the ground to intervene.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Video footage from the scene is being reviewed to identify those responsible for the unruly behavior.

Although the police have not officially linked DCOP Abrokwa’s removal to the chaotic scenes, the timing of his reassignment has fueled speculation about his department’s role in the apparent security lapses. Observers have raised concerns over the police’s ability to safeguard critical democratic processes, especially during events of such national significance.

The Council of State elections are pivotal in Ghana’s governance structure, as they determine regional representatives who provide counsel to the President on national policy. The disruptions in Kumasi have not only marred the credibility of the election process but also intensified public scrutiny of security operations in the region.

Stakeholders are now calling for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the country’s law enforcement and electoral systems.
