Asante Kotoko SC delivered a resounding statement of intent on Sunday, thrashing Karela United FC 4-2 at the iconic Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The Week 8 fixture of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League marked a triumphant return to winning ways for the Porcupine Warriors, who had endured a bruising 6-1 aggregate defeat to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in their continental campaign just days prior.
The victory not only silenced doubters but also provided much-needed solace to the passionate Kumasi faithful, who turned out in droves to rally behind their beloved Reds.
The match kicked off with electric intensity, and Kotoko wasted no time asserting dominance. In the 6th minute, winger Hubert Gyau ignited the stadium with a thunderous strike, latching onto a precise cross from left-back Dauda Saaka.
Gyau outmaneuvered Karela skipper Fatawu Mohammed with a clever feint before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner, sending the home crowd into ecstasy and giving Kotoko an early 1-0 lead.
Karela United, however, refused to roll over. Just ten minutes later, in the 16th minute, they were awarded a penalty after Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara misjudged a challenge, clumsily fouling a surging Karela forward inside the box.
Midfielder Bless Ege stepped up confidently and slotted the spot-kick past Camara with composure, leveling the scores at 1-1 and injecting hope into the visitors’ camp.
The equalizer proved short-lived. Kotoko’s response was swift and ruthless. Hubert Gyau, already the hero of the hour, grabbed his second goal in spectacular fashion around the 25th minute.
Capitalizing on a defensive lapse, he curled a cracker from the edge of the box into the far post, restoring the lead at 2-1.
The momentum swung firmly in Kotoko’s favor, and sensational midfielder Seth Kwadwo piled on the pressure in the 33rd minute.
Kwadwo, orchestrating play from the heart of midfield, danced past two defenders before rifling a low drive into the bottom corner, making it 3-1 and ensuring the hosts entered halftime with a commanding upper hand.
The second half saw Karela United emerge with renewed vigor, determined to claw their way back. Coach Nurudeen Amadu urged his side to battle for every 50/50 ball and seize control of midfield, but their efforts crumbled against Kotoko’s impenetrable trio of Seth Kwadwo, Lord Hillary Adabo, and the irrepressible Hubert Gyau.
The Porcupines’ engine room dictated the tempo, winning duels and transitioning seamlessly from defense to attack.
The rout continued just a minute past the hour mark, in the 61st minute, when substitute Peter Amidu Acquah deepened Karela’s misery. Acquah, introduced to inject fresh legs, pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home to make it 4-1, effectively sealing the contest.
Karela managed a consolation in the 70th minute through a well-worked move that breached Kotoko’s defense, reducing the deficit to 4-2. Despite a late push, time ran out for the visitors, who couldn’t muster enough to force a draw.
This win breathes new life into Kotoko’s season, compensating their loyal supporters—especially the fervent Kumasi fans—for the recent African heartbreak. With momentum on their side, the Porcupine Warriors will look to build on this performance in upcoming fixtures, especially against Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday in Accra.
