Asante Kotoko have officially terminated their contract with 29-year-old Ghanaian left-back Kwasi Asante, ending a brief and injury-plagued stint that began during the January 2025 transfer window.
The mutual agreement, finalized on May 13, 2025, brings a disappointing close to a transfer that initially sparked high expectations among fans and pundits.
Signed to strengthen Kotoko’s defense for the second half of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, Asante arrived with an impressive resume, having played for Guinea’s Hafia FC, Tanzania’s Simba SC, and Mbabane Swallows in Eswatini.
His versatility to operate as a left-back, centre-back, or left-winger, coupled with comparisons to Real Madrid legend Marcelo, fueled optimism that he would become a key asset for the Porcupine Warriors.
However, persistent injuries prevented Asante from making a single competitive appearance for the club.
Weeks after joining, Asante suffered multiple setbacks that sidelined him from full training and matchday squads.
Despite intensive rehabilitation efforts under Kotoko’s medical team, his condition did not improve sufficiently for a return to action. Following lengthy discussions, both parties agreed to part ways, with Kotoko providing financial compensation to the defender.
Now a free agent, Asante is expected to prioritize recovery and rehabilitation to relaunch his career ahead of the 2025/26 season.
His departure aligns with Kotoko’s ongoing squad restructuring under head coach Abdul Karim Zito, who is focused on building a resilient and competitive team to restore the club’s dominance in Ghanaian and continental football.
This marks the end of a challenging chapter for both Asante and Kotoko, as the club continues to navigate squad changes and fan expectations in their pursuit of success.
