Asante Kotoko Appoint South African Tactician Eric Tinkler as New Head Coach

Ghanaian football giants Asante Kotoko have officially appointed South African tactician Eric Tinkler as their new head coach with immediate effect, the club confirmed on Friday.

The Porcupine Warriors made the announcement through their official channels, hailing the 55-year-old as “a world-class coach of proven pedigree, extensive top-flight experience, and a distinguished playing career at the highest level of the game.”

Tinkler brings a wealth of knowledge from the South African Premier Soccer League and arrives at a pivotal moment for the Kumasi-based club as they seek stability and renewed ambition ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Asante Kotoko had been operating with interim arrangements since the departure of Karim Zito, with figures such as Prince Yaw Owusu and Hamza Obeng stepping in temporarily. The move marks the culmination of a search process supported by the club’s newly appointed Director of Football, Dutch football legend Stanley Menzo, who joined earlier in the year to help strengthen the technical setup.

A former South African international with 45 caps to his name — including participation in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph — Tinkler enjoyed a solid playing career across Europe and South Africa before transitioning into coaching. His managerial journey features successful stints at high-profile clubs such as Orlando Pirates, where he lifted the Nedbank Cup, Cape Town City (securing the League Cup), SuperSport United, Chippa United, Maritzburg United, and most recently Sekhukhune United. Known for his tactical acumen and ability to deliver results under pressure, he is expected to inject fresh energy into Kotoko’s squad as the club aims to challenge for domestic honors and make a stronger impression in continental competitions.

This appointment signals Asante Kotoko’s clear intent to blend experienced leadership with their storied heritage as one of Africa’s most decorated clubs, positioning them for a competitive resurgence in the coming campaign.
