Black Stars Team Manager Ameenu Shardow has welcomed the Ghana Football Association’s decision to honour former striker Asamoah Gyan with a testimonial match, describing it as long overdue.
The GFA announced plans to honour Gyan for his outstanding contributions to Ghanaian football, a move Shardow believes is a fitting tribute to the country’s all-time top scorer.
Shardow praised the GFA for taking the initiative to honour Gyan, saying, “It’s extremely important because, aside from the fact that we are using it to honour a distinguished personality, somebody who has given everything for this nation, this also serves as a sign of a nation that appreciates its heroes.” He added that the testimonial match would encourage other players to strive for excellence, knowing that their efforts would be recognized and appreciated.
Gyan, who retired in 2023 at 37, remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. He played in three World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) and is Africa’s top goalscorer in the history of the tournament. Shardow expressed his delight that the GFA is taking the lead in organizing the testimonial match, rather than leaving it to private individuals.
Asamoah Gyan’s legacy extends beyond his impressive playing career. He has been involved in various initiatives, including working with the Black Stars in non-official roles, complementing the efforts of former teammate Stephen Appiah, who serves as deputy chair of the Management Committee. The testimonial match is a fitting tribute to Gyan’s dedication and service to Ghanaian football.
