Malik Adama, an aspiring National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest the Manhyia South Member of Parliament and investigate anyone alleged to have helped the MP evade arrest.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Morning Show in Accra-Tema on September 24, 2026, Mr Adama said the failed attempt to arrest the MP must not bring the matter to an end, insisting that EOCO should pursue the case through the appropriate legal channels. He specifically called for the conduct of lawyer Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa to be investigated, alleging that he was among those who intervened during the attempted arrest.
“Nobody should help him escape lawful arrest”
Mr Adama argued that if EOCO has lawful grounds to arrest the MP, the agency must continue its efforts to ensure that he answers questions arising from its investigation. He said the same principle should apply to anyone who allegedly interferes with a lawful arrest.
According to him, where evidence establishes that a person deliberately obstructed a lawful arrest or assisted an individual to evade arrest, the appropriate legal process should be initiated against that person. His comments come amid EOCO’s position that it had identified two individuals who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape and that their conduct was being assessed for possible lawful action.
“MP or not, answer the questions”
Mr Adama insisted that being a Member of Parliament should not place anyone permanently beyond the reach of the law. He said parliamentary privileges must be properly understood and should not be interpreted as a licence for an MP to avoid legitimate investigations.
For Mr Adama, if the MP has questions to answer, he should submit himself to the appropriate legal process. He maintained that accountability should apply to politicians, lawyers, public officials and ordinary citizens alike.
EOCO must also account for its conduct
However, Mr Adama did not spare EOCO from criticism. He said that while the MP should answer any lawful questions arising from the investigation, EOCO officers must equally ensure that their conduct during an arrest complies with the Constitution and the law.
He questioned aspects of the attempted arrest, particularly the alleged use of force during the confrontation, and urged the public to examine the available video footage carefully rather than relying solely on competing claims about what happened.
Mr Adama maintained that law-enforcement agencies have powers to effect arrests where the law permits, but those powers must be exercised lawfully and professionally.
Accountability on both sides
Mr Adama said the controversy should therefore be viewed from two perspectives: whether the MP should submit to a lawful investigation and whether EOCO followed the proper procedure in attempting to arrest him.
He stressed that neither political position nor institutional authority should be used to shield wrongdoing. He called on EOCO to establish the facts surrounding the incident, review the available evidence and take appropriate legal action against anyone found to have committed an offence.
At the same time, he said any allegation of misconduct or excessive force by EOCO officials should also be properly investigated.
Mr Adama concluded that the rule of law must apply equally to everyone involved in the controversy.
