NDC Station asserts that, the only rational choice a voter should make is to vote for John Mahama (#8) come December 7 to provide sustainable solutions to the rampant criminal activities in the country with the Light Up Ghana initiative playing a critical and sustainable role in the process.
The Nana Addo and Dr Bawumia led government known for sloganeering has been symbolic at best in lighting up our streets. The Operation Clean Your Frontage which includes street light initiative lasted a few weeks and only in Accra.
Most of NPP’s government promise of streetlights to northern Ghana has remained just a mere promise. The crime index under this government peaked at 52.00 in 2019 and was 49.3 in 2023. However, from 2014 to 2016, crime index had never risen above 49.00 under the leadership of John Mahama.

JOHN MAHAMA LIGHT UP GHANA PROJECT; A BOLD SOLUTION TO CRIME PREVENTION
Accra, Ghana 21 October 2024.
- An eye witnessed recounted the stabbing and robbing incident of Osei in the darkness of the Pentagon Evany Road at the University of Ghana on May 5, 2019. The dream and a life cut short for the level 400 economics student. I have witness four other such events during my time in Legon, even some of our own “abovesaid Commonwealth Hall were not spared by these gangs of assailants on that darkness engulfed road on campus due to lack of lighting and visibility. Criminality is a subset of darkness and streetlight provision has gone beyond mere illumination becoming a tool for improving public safety and discouraging criminal activities. The Evany Pentagon Road of darkness is one of thousand such places in Ghana urban and suburban areas which experience violent crimes and robbery activities on regular basis unfortunately with human lives at stake.
- The folklore of a progressive nation’s vision is sensitive to the lives of its citizens regardless of their social status. Their safety is paramount to the visionary leader. This is what makes the NDC and John Mahama’s Light Up Ghana project a bold solution for crime prevention and safety assurance. The Routine Activity Theory posits that, crime occurs when a motivated offender encounters a suitable target in the absence of a capable guardianship. A better street light system in Ghana can serve as that guardianship. This universal street lighting programme, thus providing street lights to all inner cities and major roads in the country will not only support the 24 hour economy but will also ensure the following
- Deter criminal activities as well-lit areas will increase visibility making it more difficult for crimes to be committed without being seen.
- Enhance Surveillance, good lightening allows law enforcers and community watch dogs monitor effectively leading to quicker responses to criminal activity
- The public perception of safety and community confidence will improve drastically with better street lightening among residents and pedestrians, encouraging more people to use public spaces at night. These increase in foot traffic will further deter crime
- With measures such as Surveillance systems and police presence, proper street lightening is a cost effective investment in crime prevention.
- The Nana Addo and Dr Bawumia led government known for sloganeering has been symbolic at best in lighting up our streets. The Operation Clean Your Frontage which includes street light initiative lasted a few weeks and only in Accra. - Up next, we will discuss how the next NDC and John Mahama’s government intends to use integrating technology (smart lighting systems) to enhance the benefits of street lighting across Ghana.
