The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has shown strong support for former President John Mahama’s commitment to revitalizing collapsed industries through an economic policy that promises to create more employment opportunities.
Abraham Koomson, the General Secretary of the GFL, expressed enthusiasm for John Mahama’s “24-Hour Economy” proposal, which aims to reintroduce the successful three-shift system that was prominent in manufacturing industries from the 1970s to the early 1990s.
According to Mr. Koomson, this system played a crucial role in providing employment for thousands of workers during its peak, and he believes its reintroduction could significantly boost job creation in the country.
In an interview on XYZ TV’s Dwaboase monitored by Ahotor FM’s Emmanuel Romeo Tetteh, Mr. Koomson reiterated the GFL’s unwavering support for John Mahama’s proposal.
He argued that the removal of burdensome taxes, which have stifled local industries under the current administration, could trigger a resurgence in the manufacturing sector.
He criticized the current government’s tax policies, stating that they have led to the collapse of many businesses or forced them to relocate.
He emphasized the importance of a balanced tax system that does not overburden businesses, as this is essential for economic growth and job creation.
Abraham Koomson also highlighted the current state of Tema, once Ghana’s industrial hub, now a “dead town” due to the decline in industrial activity.
He believes that the 24-Hour Economy policy has the potential to revive industries in Tema and across the country, ultimately leading to more jobs and a stronger economy.
In conclusion, Mr. Koomson expressed optimism that a revitalized manufacturing sector, supported by the 24-Hour Economy policy and targeted measures, would help achieve the goals outlined in John Mahama’s economic vision for Ghana.
