Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has categorically denied allegations that he referred to former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, as a “drunkard.”
The controversy arose after the NDC issued a statement demanding that Mr. Atta Akyea retract his remarks and issue a public apology for what they termed an “unfounded allegation” made during a mini-rally last Wednesday.
In response, Mr. Atta Akyea, during an interview with Ahotor News, firmly stated that he never called Mr. Mahama a drunkard.
He described the NDC’s accusations as mere “propaganda,” aimed at discrediting him.
Mr. Atta Akyea challenged the NDC to provide any evidence, such as an exact quote or recording, to substantiate their claims that he had insulted the former President in such a manner.
The MP expressed his belief that the NDC’s demand for a retraction and apology was a strategic move to create a distraction and stir up unnecessary controversy ahead of the upcoming elections.
He emphasized that political discourse should be focused on substantive issues that matter to the people of Ghana, rather than on baseless allegations.
Mr. Atta Akyea reiterated his commitment to respectful and constructive political engagement, urging all parties to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could escalate tensions.
As the exchange continues, it has further fueled political tensions between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition NDC, adding another layer of controversy in an already charged political atmosphere as the nation approaches the 2024 general elections.
