The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as the gross mismanagement of Ghana’s economy during their nearly eight years in power.
Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, on Saturday, August 24, Kwetey highlighted the stark contrast between the economic conditions under the NDC and those under the NPP.
He pointed out that when the NDC left office in 2016, they handed over a robust and resilient economy marked by sustainable public debt levels, a favorable debt-to-GDP ratio of 55.6%, and a stable credit rating of B-. The budget deficit at the time was 6.1%, and inflation was on a downward trend, standing at around 15%.
Kwetey also noted that the NDC left behind a currency depreciation rate of approximately 9.6%, a strong manufacturing sector, and two substantial oil fields. Additionally, the cocoa sector, which is vital to Ghana’s economy, was thriving under the NDC’s stewardship.
In contrast, he accused the NPP of squandering these economic gains and leading the country into severe economic distress.
He urged Ghanaians to hold the NPP accountable for the current economic challenges and vote them out of power in the upcoming elections.
Fiifi Kwetey’s remarks were a call to action, emphasizing that the NDC is committed to restoring the economy and putting Ghana back on a path of sustainable growth and development.
