The woes of our economic hardship stem from political leadership failures– Carbonu

The government is grappling with both political and economic indiscipline, which has placed it in a precarious position when it comes to managing contributions from labor unions. This lack of financial discipline has led to defaults across various sectors and markets, both domestically and internationally.

During an interview on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Angel Carbonu expressed concern over the leadership failures of the New Patriotic Party government. They highlighted how the government’s mismanagement has resulted in significant losses for workers and pensioners, particularly through financial arrangements aimed at addressing the government’s financial distress, which has forced them to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

NAGRAT’s president, Mr. Carbonu, emphasized that failure to address their concerns could lead to further action against what they perceive as financial malfeasance by the government. He stressed the importance of workers’ contributions and the need for these funds to be properly managed and transferred to their designated institutions. Unfortunately, he noted, the government has failed to do so, with the last payment into the tier-two pension scheme dating back to June 2023.

The situation has stirred discontent among labor organizations like NAGRAT, prompting them to issue an ultimatum. They demand that all deductions from their members’ salaries be promptly transferred to the respective institutions by the close of the following week. Failure to comply, Mr. Carbonu warned, would compel them to take further action to ensure accountability and fairness for Ghanaian workers.
