In a bid to enhance the competitiveness of Ghana’s cinema industry and attract more film productions, the government has announced plans to introduce a significant tax rebate. The proposed rebate, set at 20%, aims to incentivize strategic film productions and foster growth within the local filmmaking ecosystem. It is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to stakeholders across the industry spectrum.
President Akufo-Addo unveiled the initiative during his State of the Nation Address, highlighting that measures are currently under deliberation by the Cabinet and will be officially unveiled soon. The government, through the National Film Authority, is committed to supporting the production of world-class content and films while also enhancing cinema infrastructure in Ghana and across the continent.
The President elaborated on the comprehensive fiscal incentives being developed to strengthen the film sector, which include income tax and VAT incentives, import duty exemptions on film production equipment, and film financing relief. He emphasized that this favorable fiscal regime for cinema projects should make Ghana an attractive choice for film production.
The proposed tax rebate is part of the government’s broader efforts to position Ghana as a competitive destination for film production and to promote the growth and development of the local cinema industry.
