The Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, has raised concerns about the dire shortage of dialysis machines at the facility. According to him, there is only one functional dialysis machine at KATH, which is insufficient to meet the needs of the numerous patients requiring such treatment.
Professor Addai-Mensah emphasized that this scarcity has compelled the hospital to prioritize patients within the Ashanti region, thereby denying treatment to those from outside the region. He expressed deep concern over the plight of patients and the potential loss of lives due to the limited resources available.
Despite the challenges faced, the CEO noted that they are compelled to transfer patients to private hospitals for treatment in order to save lives, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
In light of these challenges, Professor Addai-Mensah called upon the government, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other relevant bodies to intervene and provide assistance. He stressed the severity of the situation, warning that failure to address it promptly could result in avoidable loss of lives.
