The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the party will not support the proposal for a change in the date for the 2024 elections from December to November.
He said the NDC do not believe that this is being proposed in good faith,
The NDC flagbearer made the remarks while opening the Minority caucus meeting in Ho on Saturday February 10, 2024.
He also said the National Democratic Congress NDC does not support the EC’s proposal of using Ghana card as the only document for the registration of the voter ID
The Electoral Commission (EC) has proposed the adoption of the Ghana Card as the only proof of citizenship ahead of the next voter registration exercise.
According to the election management body, it had already reached a consensus with the political parties and was waiting for an amendment of the registration laws by Parliament to give legal backing to the move.
The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe said Ghanaians who do not have the Ghana card would not be able to register to vote because the law would not allow the use of passport when Parliament amends it.
But Mr. Mahama said the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was sensing clear defeat, and had, therefore, begun scheming to undermine the credibility of the elections, such as the sudden interest by the Electoral Commission to shift the date of elections from December 7 to November 7, at a time it had not demonstrated readiness to conduct the general elections.
