The National Democratic Congress leadership in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency joins other well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn in its entirety, the military shooting of citizens in the Nuaso area within the constituency just because of the uninformed forceful installation of prepaid meters by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The sad event which occurred yesterday, Monday, 22nd August 2022, has resulted in some of the citizens sustaining varying degrees of injuries with four (4) of them in critical condition as a result of being hit by gunshots from the military.
This action by the military, we believe, is premeditated. At their first stop within the Nuaso community, at about 11: 00 GMT, a final year student (Name withheld) of the Manya Krobo Senior High School who was peacefully eating his GOB3 (gari and beans) received slaps from the military upon suspicion that he was taking pictures of the military men.
It would be recalled that the first time the military men were deployed to the area, the Member of Parliament for the area, in the person of Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi raised the issue on the floor of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament directed that the Military should be withdrawn immediately, but this directive has never been complied with.
Subsequently, there was a clash between some community folks and the military personnel which led to a total blackout for almost thirty (30) days.
Electricity was only reinstalled on Friday, 19th August 2022, only for the military to come back to the community on Monday, 22nd August 2022, to carry out this dastardly act at a time in which consultative meetings were going on in the community to find a lasting solution to the impasse.
