Pica happens when you get unusual cravings to eat things that aren’t food, such as ice or clay. It may be a sign of inadequate nutritional intake. Pica is more common in pregnant women because your body has increased nutritional needs during pregnancy.
Sometimes the taste or smell of dust, smoke, garbage, soap, matches, chalk, pegs or other such items alone makes them better.
Ahotor Newsroom in an interview with an opulent dietician Esther Obeng Mensah, who is a registered dietician, in a detailed talk to find out what spikes this condition in pregnant women.
According to her, when a pregnant person is low on nutrients such as iron and zinc, extreme stress, mental health conditions can also be a factor in Pica.
She also mentioned that most cases recorded are not related to pregnant persons alone but children, old people, mentally ill persons
According to the Opulent Dietician, it does not solve any health problem as some people perceive instead it does more harm to the mother and the unborn baby.
Esther Obeng Mensah advised that people who go through such condition must show up in the hospital or see a dietician for treatment and must not be taken for granted at all because it is not normal.
