Expect more protests till US deal is reversed – Asiedu Nketia to government

Government has not seen the last of oppositions against its policies as the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia has hinted intentions to undertake more protests against the US-Ghana military deal.

Addressing the media during the ‘Put Ghana First’ demonstration, Asiedu Nketia asserted that there are more manifestations which will be executed periodically till the NPP government rescinds its decision on the deal.

He added that this was an act, devoid of petty politics, meant to protect the sovereignty of Ghana, which the ruling government does not hold in high regard.

“This is not going to be the last one. We are going to do several manifestations and take all lawful means to ensure that this agreement does not work in this country. The most annoying part of it is that ministers and members of Parliament of this government, instead of convincing us about the need for such an agreement, they go round saying that Ghana has no sovereignty to protect. If they think that Ghana has no sovereignty to protect we know that Ghana has sovereignty to protect and we will protect that sovereignty”, Asiedu Nketia argued.

Basing his arguments on the Kenya-UK military pact, Johnson Asiedu Nketia stated that “there are clauses that retain the sovereignty of Kenya. All the visiting forces will require visas before they come to Kenyan lands. They require permits before they fly over Kenya airspace or they enter Kenya’s territorial sea. They are subject to all the immigration laws, all the laws within the country, all the customs laws within the country”.

The Ghana – US military cooperation agreement, which has received severe backlash from Ghanaians, gives American soldiers unimpeded access to certain key installations and in return the West African country will earn $20 million by way of training of its soldiers and equipment.
