Former President John Dramani Mahama delivered a keynote address at an experts’ seminar held today in Pretoria, South Africa to mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Government (ACDEG).

The Charter was adopted by member states at the 8th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) in 2007 but came into force on February 15, 2012.

It aims at reinforcing the commitment of member states towards the promotion and consolidation of democratic governance and human rights, among others.

Former President Mahama’s address will be on Africa’s Democratic Dividends and Deficits, a statement issued by his office on Monday said.

He will later join participants to discuss issues relating to democracy, rule of law, human rights, and credible elections. As part of the activities, the statement signed by Special Aide Joyce Bawa Mogtari continued, the former president will also join South African President Jacob Zuma to open the 6th High Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance, also in Pretoria. The Dialogue will focus on how to ‘Enhance Youth Participation and Representation in Governance in Africa’. The statement did not indicate when the former president will return.
