Eighty NDC Members of Parliament yesterday morning paid a courtesy call on Former President John Mahama at his office in Cantonments, Accra. They were received on his behalf by Former Chief of Staff in the Mahama Administration, Julius Debrah. The Former President was out of the country on international duties at the time of the visit.
The purpose of the visit is undisclosed but it is believed to be in connection with the MPs desire for the Former President to lead the NDC into the 2020 elections. Sources say the vast majority of the NDC MPs believe the NDC’s chances of winning the 2020 elections and returning to power will be brighter with the Former President as its flagbearer. What is more, many of them are under mounting pressure from the grassroots in their various constituencies to get Mahama to lead the party into the 2020 elections.
Investigations by this paper indicate other MPs were outside the jurisdiction at the time of the impromptu visit but for which the number which called at the Former President’s office would have been higher. Another visit, according to sources close to the MPs, is being planned at a time the Former President is in the country. There is speculation he will soon make a big statement on his future role in the NDC.
The former President’s popularity has been soaring since the Akufo Addo-led NPP took over the reins of government. Corruption and its cover-ups, nepotism, the activities of pro-NPP terrorists groups (The Invisible Forces, the Delta Forces etc), the hapless implementation of the Free SHS programme, the rising cost of living, the inability of the government to pay salaries promptly and the increase in crime rate which has led to a feeling of insecurity in the country has resulted in the call of many on the Former President to stage a comeback to steer the ship of state out of troubled waters.
Mahama, after the 2016 elections, in his concession speech said posterity will vindicate the work he has done. That vindication seems to be coming earlier than expected.
