“When the Righteous Rule, the People Rejoice”: John Mahama Calls for Change to Restore Ghana’s Future

John Dramani Mahama, the Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Ghanaians to embrace change in the upcoming December 7th elections, citing a powerful biblical quote to underscore his message.

He referenced Proverbs 29:2, which says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” John Mahama emphasized that Ghanaians are currently in mourning and desperately need change for the betterment of the nation.

He expressed concern that under the current administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s once-bright future has dimmed.

The country, which was once considered the shining star of Africa, is losing its luster. According to Mr. Mahama, the Black Star of Ghana is no longer shining, and the nation’s potential is being stifled.

He argued that Ghana is at a critical crossroads, and December 7th will be a decisive moment for Ghanaians to choose whether the country moves forward in development or slips further into decline.

He called on voters to make a wise decision, as the outcome of this election will determine the nation’s future.

The former president highlighted the concerning fact that Ghana, historically the second-largest economy in West Africa, has now been surpassed by Ivory Coast under the current administration.

He warned that urgent change is necessary, as the NPP government has allowed the economy to deteriorate.

“The economy influences every sector—education, sports, health—and when the economy is weak, nothing works,” Mr. Mahama said.

He pointed to the current state of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, as a reflection of the country’s broader challenges, noting that the team’s struggles are symbolic of a nation in turmoil.

“Just as Proverbs 29:2 states, ‘When the righteous rule, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people mourn,’ Ghanaians are mourning now, and we need that change in the upcoming elections,” he declared.

John Mahama also voiced his concern about the growing levels of poverty in the country, with many Ghanaians falling further below the poverty line each day.

Citing data from the Afrobarometer survey, he noted that over 80% of Ghanaians believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, further stressing the urgent need for change.

In response to the nation’s economic woes, John Mahama promised to launch a National Economic Dialogue aimed at openly addressing the country’s financial challenges and identifying solutions.

He assured Ghanaians that the NDC would restore the cocoa sector, which has seen a decline in production, with only 400,000 metric tonnes harvested this year.

He pledged to continue the successful initiatives implemented by the NDC to support cocoa farmers and boost production in the coming years.

He concluded by emphasizing the need for a national reset, stating that Ghana has reached a point of stagnation.

“Ghana is stuck, and we need to reset to restore normalcy,” he said. “The NDC is the only party with the people, the ideas, and the experience to turn the country around and put it back on the path to progress.”

In his call for action, John Mahama made it clear that the upcoming election is the real opportunity for Ghanaians to choose a fresh start and rebuild the nation’s future.
