The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has congratulated the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), emphasizing the significance of rising through the ranks to lead the Ghana Police Service.
In his remarks, he also expressed appreciation for the outgoing IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, acknowledging his contributions to the country during his tenure.
Hon. Agbana stressed that the appointment of a new IGP is a constitutional process, and there should be no controversy surrounding it.
Citing Article 202 of the 1992 Constitution, he explained that the President has the mandate to appoint the IGP in consultation with the Council of State.
He reiterated that President Mahama has acted within his constitutional authority and that the current debate over the appointment is unnecessary.
“I don’t see where this sudden difficulty is coming from, as if President Mahama’s appointment or replacement of Dr. Akuffo Dampare is a novelty. Since 1992, successive governments have appointed IGPs and other security heads. This is a critical and sensitive position, as these leaders manage our national security. The President must be allowed to work with a team he is comfortable with to achieve his vision of keeping the country safe and driving economic progress,” Agbana stated.
He further pointed out that previous presidents, including John Mahama during his 2013-2016 tenure and President Akufo-Addo after him, made similar appointments without controversy.
Hon. Agbana urged the public to focus on the moral aspect of the decision, emphasizing that the President’s commitment is to ensure the safety and well-being of Ghanaians.
