The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology has issued a stern warning to politicians involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
According to the Minister, the government will not tolerate any politician caught engaging in galamsey, regardless of their status.
This warning comes after President Mahama’s campaign promise to tackle the galamsey menace.
The Minister emphasized that the government is committed to fulfilling this promise and will not spare anyone found guilty of illegal mining.
The government’s efforts to combat galamsey have been ongoing, with measures such as:
*Establishing an Inter-Ministerial Committee*: to deal with the crisis situation and provide support for the operations of the committee.
*Operation Halt*: an initiative to target galamsey hotspots and enforce a halt to all mining operations on heavily polluted rivers.²
-*Suspension of Mining Activities*: in forest reserves to preserve the country’s natural heritage.
The Minister’s warning serves as a reminder that the government is serious about addressing the galamsey menace and will take action against anyone involved, regardless of their political affiliation.
