A chauffeur who was driving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua when a fatal road crash claimed the lives of two of the athlete’s close aides has appeared before a magistrate’s court in Nigeria.
Adeniyi Kayode, 46, was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Tuesday and faces four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving. The case was adjourned to February 25 after prosecutors requested additional time to seek legal advice.
Kayode, dressed in a black hoodie and trousers, did not address the court during the brief hearing. He was earlier granted bail in the sum of five million naira.
The charges stem from a December 29, 2025 crash on the busy Lagos–Ibadan expressway, where a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary lorry. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Joshua, 36, sustained injuries in the crash and was treated in hospital before being discharged two days later. Images later emerged showing the former heavyweight champion being assisted from the wreckage.
Following the incident, Joshua paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami in an emotional Instagram post, describing them as “great men” and acknowledging the pain their families are enduring.
Joshua, who was born in Watford in the United Kingdom but has family roots in Sagamu, was reportedly travelling to visit relatives for New Year celebrations at the time of the accident.
Kayode is facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
