Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital Official Urges Ghanaians to Stop Abandoning Mentally Challenged Relatives

The Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in the Central Region, Grace Korkor Tetteh, has called on Ghanaians and families to stop abandoning their mentally challenged relatives at psychiatric institutions.

Speaking at a community outreach program, Tetteh expressed concern about the increasing number of individuals who are left at the hospital without proper care or support from their families.
She emphasized the urgent need for families to take responsibility for the well-being of their loved ones, particularly those with mental health issues, and to work closely with healthcare professionals for their recovery.

Many individuals who come to our facility are abandoned by their families, leaving them without any emotional or financial support,” Tetteh said.
This not only affects the individual’s recovery process but also contributes to the increasing strain on our healthcare system. Mental health is a serious issue, and it’s time for families and society to treat it as such.”

Tetteh highlighted that abandonment of mentally ill patients not only violates their basic human rights but also significantly hampers their chances of rehabilitation.
“Psychiatric care is not just about medication and treatment; it also involves family support, community involvement, and societal acceptance.
