Following heavy rainfall across parts of the Greater Accra Region on June 9, residents of Tema Community 5, especially those living in the Church Village area, experienced severe flooding. The disaster forced several families from their homes, damaged personal property, and reignited concerns over the area’s persistent flooding problems. Residents have once again called for sustainable drainage upgrades and effective flood-control interventions to help prevent future occurrences.

In response to the disaster, the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Tema West, Hon. Dennis Amfo-Sefah, paid a visit to the affected community and donated relief items to support victims. During the visit, he interacted with residents, many of whom recounted how they had lost household items and other valuables to the floods.

As part of the relief effort, Mr. Amfo-Sefah presented items including mosquito nets, mosquito coils, buckets, detergents, dresses, school uniforms for children, bedsheets, and hot meals to help alleviate the hardships being faced by affected families. He described the scale of destruction as shocking, noting that although flooding in the area is not a new phenomenon, the impact of this year’s incident was particularly severe.

Citing reports from the Ghana Meteorological Agency, he noted that rainfall patterns this year are expected to be significant and urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season. He also advised victims to avoid walking through floodwaters, warning that the water could be contaminated by sewage and other harmful substances that pose serious health risks.

Mr. Amfo-Sefah encouraged affected residents not to lose hope, assuring them that better days lie ahead. He stressed that his decision to support the victims was motivated by his love for the people of Tema West and not by political considerations.

“Love does not know political colours,” he stated, adding that although he was unsuccessful in the 2024 parliamentary election, he still considers it his responsibility to support residents during difficult times. He further appealed to government and other stakeholders to assist flood victims as they work to rebuild their lives.

The former parliamentary candidate was accompanied by the Tema West NPP Constituency Chairman, Nana Kwasi Poku Bosompim, and other party executives. Mr. Bosompim commended the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of Mr. Amfo-Sefah’s continued commitment to the welfare of residents. He noted that the parliamentary candidate has remained close to the people and was therefore quick to respond to their plight during this difficult period.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Hon. Dennis Amfo-Sefah for coming to their aid during this difficult period. They said they were surprised by the gesture, especially considering that many of them did not vote for him in the 2024 parliamentary election. According to the victims, the donation demonstrates genuine concern for the welfare of the people beyond political affiliations and will help ease some of the hardships caused by the floods.

Some of the displaced victims are currently taking temporary shelter at the Gospel Revival Ministry and the Church of Pentecost Ideal Assembly following the flooding incident.
